What to Expect at a Biomechanical / Musculoskeletal Assessment
Every step you take impacts your entire body.
When standing, walking or running, subtle imbalances can cause compensations throughout your muscles, joints and tendons. Over time, this can place additional strain on areas of the body that aren’t designed to handle the extra load.

Gait analysis using dynamic footscan
WHAT IS A BIOMECHANICAL ASSESSMENT?
Understand how your body moves - and why it matters.
Detailed History
We start by finding out about your problem, symptoms, medical history, activity levels and footwear to understand your concerns and how they may be affecting you.
Physical Assessment
We assess your posture, joints, muscles, foot shape and lower limb function whilst sitting, standing and during movement to identify potential causes of pain or imbalance.
Pressure Plate
Dynamic pressure plate analysis shows how your feet load and unload as you move, helping us identify areas of high pressure and patterns that may contribute to foot, ankle or lower limb problems.
Video Analysis of your gait
We analyse how you walk or run, using video where appropriate to identify subtle gait patterns or irregularities that may be contributing to your pain or discomfort.
Identifying the root cause of your pain helps us create a targeted treatment plan to improve movement and reduce discomfort.
What You Can Expect During This Assessment
When attending your biomechanical / musculoskeletal assessment, you should bring the three pairs of footwear you wear most regularly and a pair of shorts to change into. It also helps if your top is a different colour to your shorts.

We assess at your existing footwear for suitability and fit. We also examine the wear marks which can give us clues about your gait.

Wearing shorts helps our podiatrists to carry out a thorough examination and assess your posture, movement, muscular function and joint function.

As with all our assessments you may bring someone with you or ask for a chaperone if this would make you feel more comfortable.

During the assessment, our podiatrist will take a detailed history of your problem and may assess your footwear, posture, feet and lower limbs, muscle strength and foot shape. You may then be asked to walk or run across a dynamic foot scan plate to identify areas of high pressure or anomalies in your gait. We may also ask you to walk or run outside or on a treadmill.

From there, we can identify areas of imbalance and identify the most appropriate treatment to help you move more comfortably and confidently.

Once your assessment is complete, your podiatrist will explain the diagnosis and discuss the treatment options available to help reduce your pain and improve your function.
